Turtle Bay Beach Club, Kenya’s responsible resort
If you feel slightly uncomfortable holidaying in a country where there is still extreme poverty and disadvantage, then a stay here will assuage your guilt.
Serena Beach Hotel and Spa: Luxury on Kenya’s north coast
This elegant hotel sits in lush tropical gardens on the edge of the Indian Ocean. Manicured lawns with scattered dark wood furniture run down to the white sand beach, along which you will see the odd camel strolling with a Kenyan touting for business.
I arrive at Ngutuni Lodge after a two-hour game drive through the vast expanse of Tsavo East in Kenya. We have spotted elephants showering in the red dust, giraffe munching at the tree tops and all kinds of antelope, from the tiny duiker to the stocky waterbuck; but as we walk into the reception I feel foolish for craning so hard to get the perfect picture. For there, gathered around a water hole directly in front of the lodge is a vast array of animals, so close you can almost touch them.
When I imagined my holiday on the coast of Kenya, I failed to conjure up a game of beach volleyball with a couple of Massai warriors in full garb. And yet this is what I found myself doing on the white sand in front of Rex resort's Papillon Lagoon Reef hotel on Kenya's South coast (South of Mombasa, that is).
I'm sat on the Lord Delamere terrace at Fairmont's Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi, imagining what it might have been like in 1904 when this hotel first opened its doors to weary British travellers coming to make their fame and fortune in the new British colony.

Empowering women to develop their own communities
Salima, on the shores of Lake Malawi, is probably best known for playing host to the world music festival Lake of Stars, where backpackers and music fans flock to drink bottles of "green" (the local beer), lie on the sand and party into the small hours. But life for the people of nearby Chidzanja village is a very different story.
Royal Madikwe: a luxury safari experience
I am sat on huge white cushions on a rattan sofa in the loft of a game lodge. Outside the sky is splitting in terrifying flashes, the light is purple and the zebras that were moments before drinking from the watering hole just ahead of me, have vanished. I am alone, experiencing my first bush storm.
Rwanda
Known as the land of 1,000 hills, this country couldn't be further from the cliched African image of arid deserts and dry bush. Winding roads hug verdant slopes, every inch carved into fields with crops ranging from banana trees to maize. In the valleys are great sweeping tea plantations, rice fields and coffee groves.
