Getting muddy at Whatley Manor

I’d never experienced a mud chamber before. I didn’t really know what to expect. Last night, I dreamt of walking down steps in a little room filled to chest height with brown sludge, a bit like one of the challenges you might have found on the Crystal Maze, perhaps a crystal to be bobbed for like an apple. The reality was much cleaner, less slippery but still great fun.

Malmaison, London

Tucked away in the private, leafy, Charterhouse Square, sandwiched between the colourful Smithfield meat market and the charcoal towers of the Barbican, is the London edition of Malmaison, that upmarket hotel chain that has made a name for itself with covetable toiletries and stylish contemporary décor.

Stay in a Cambridge college

Trying to find a hotel room in the centre of Cambridge can be difficult, particularly in peak times as there are only about 1,000 rooms available and nearly all of these are priced at over £100 a night. It is therefore a delightful convenience that many of the beautiful and historic Cambridge colleges are opening themselves up as B&Bs during the holiday periods.

Miller’s Residence,

Notting Hill

London is a city full of surprises, but few as delightful as this eccentric hotel. From the street, you would walk straight past the inconspicuous red door on Westbourne Grove without any inkling of the Aladdin’s cave that lurks behind it. And perhaps that is for the best, because surely if too many people knew about this place, you would never be able to get a room.

ZSL London Zoo - A great family day out

London Zoo is large, 36 acres in the north-east corner of Regent's Park housing more than 750 different species. That was an exciting prospect for my 8-year-old nephew who has the energy to run a couple of marathons without getting tired, but an altogether more daunting prospect for my husband who is recovering from a car accident.

Imperial College - Bargain accommodation in the heart of London

I didn't know it was still possible to get a B&B in London for just £35.50 a night in a place that is comfortable and clean and has major museums on its doorstep. But it is. I feel like I've struck gold. Imperial College in London has student accommodation on its Kensington Campus that is just a stone's throw from the V&A and the Science museum and during the summer months it transforms it into a smart and affordable B&B.
